Exclusive: Morgan J. Freeman's Homecoming Posted by Harold Goldberg on November 12, 2007 On Friday, I reconnected with an old pal, director Morgan J. Freeman. I hadn't been in contact with Morgan for years, since he and actress Michelle Williams kindly consented to write for me when I was at Sony. Morgan's first big indie film, Hurricane Streets, won more awards at Sundance than any other film. Now, the director is in Pittsburgh where he's in preproduction for a movie called Homecoming. It will star Mischa Barton and is co-written by Katie Fetting and Frank Hannah (who wrote the strange and fascinating The Cooler). Morgan told me that the movie is a scary thriller along the lines of Misery. In it, Mischa takes her ex boyfriend's new girlfriend hostage. But, according to Freeman, he'll ground the story in reality so that the movie "truly terrifies." Sounds like Mischa can truly stretch and show her chops as a bad girl in this one. Filming begins on December 10th and runs through late January. Go Morgan! (I hope they get a day or so off for the holidays.) Source: blogs.amctv.com/monsterfest/2007/11/exclusive-morga.html

Morgan J Freeman inks Mischa Barton for lead in “Homecoming”This is a “quasi-pseudo-Exclusive” release of Morgan’s new film “Homecoming”. Morgan has taken up residence in Pittsburgh and is currently doing pre-production and “B-Roll” shots for filming which begins on December 10. Morgan has always worked under some of the harshest weather conditions of any movie maker in the business. “Hurricane Streets” and “Just Like the Son” were shot in 100 degree plus weather in New York. El Nino forced the bonding company to move the location of “Desert Blue” to Tonapah, Nevada from California and the set was covered by six inches of snow. So much for the decision-making of bonding companies. This time they are hoping for snow as the storyline calls for snowy conditions similar to some great scenes in “Misery”. So we are hoping El Nino delivers some timely snowstorms to Pittsburgh for a White Christmas and successful filming. Morgan has quietly signed Mischa Barton as the lead in this new thriller! Mischa just finished “Malice in Sunderland” and played Marissa Cooper in “The O.C.”. In “Homecoming” she will play an obsessive, manic small-towner that tries to renew an old relationship with her former high school sweetheart. The plot thickens and becomes a scary college-aged thriller similar to “Misery”. Mischa will be joined by Matthew Long (Ghost Rider). The project is from Animus Films and Paper Street and producers include Jim Young, Bill Papariella and Bingo Gubelman. Austin Stark, and Jack Heller are in talks for the other two leads. "Homecoming" is co-written by Katie Fetting and Frank Hannah. Here’s hoping much success and good luck to the entire team as they convene in Pittsburgh, PA for the Holiday Season! Pittsburgh, PA: 'Homecoming' Movie SetI’m on the set for the movie ‘Homecoming’ (an indie thriller with Mischa Barton and Matt Long). Today I started working with Mischa on how we’ll pull off our duet-ish performance scene of one of my songs, without it ending up like a bad Sonny and Cher skit. The poor girl has never formally sung before, but she’s totally up for it and I think her singing voice sounds kinda Stevie Nicks-esque, so we’ll rock it out. Most of the crew and actors are based in LA, or in NYC as I am, so it’s kind of surreal to be sitting in a bowling alley ten minutes from my mom’s house (where I’m attempting in vain to have an end-of-year rest). If you remember, there was the report a while back from someone who heard her sing at a karaoke night in London, and they said she sounded pretty good - IIRC, they said she did a Britney song, so that maybe gives you some idea of what Mischa may well sound like when she's singing...

Shady Side Academy to be scene of movieA state tax incentive passed earlier this year keeps reeling in the filmmakers -- landing the prestigious Shady Side Academy campus a star role in an upcoming independent production. "Homecoming," starring Matt Long, Mischa Barton and Jessica Stroup, set up production for a day of shooting earlier this month at Shady Side Academy in Fox Chapel, drawing a throng of students to witness the Hollywood action. While the young starlets Long and Stroup drew the students to the scene, a $75 million annual tax incentive passed by state lawmakers in July attracted the New York-based Paper Street Films production company to Pittsburgh. "It always is ideal to film in a city that is production-friendly," Morgan J. Freeman, the director, said. "Of course, the combination of the incentives and crews here make it very attractive, and any kind of relief gets to go back into production." Freeman also directed "American Psycho II" and "Hurricane Streets." As a producer, he worked on series popular with the teen set, including "Laguna Beach: The Real O.C." and "Dawson's Creek." He has won numerous awards at film festivals and received many nominations. Bill Papariella, one of the producers, grew up in Wexford, and enthusiastically agreed that Pittsburgh would be a great area to shoot the film. The crew also sets up scenes at his alma mater, North Allegheny High School. Other locales include the community center (which doubles as a police station) in McDonald and a farm in Bell Township. Papariella said SSA's notoriety drew the production there. "It's like it was built for our script," Freeman agreed. "We needed something that represented a higher end Ivy League campus and that's something Shady Side Academy delivers." The thriller movie follows small town athletic star Mike (Long) and his new girlfriend Elizabeth (Stroup) as they return to Mike's hometown during Christmas break from college. His family and friends are surprised about his new wealthy city girl companion, and a twisted love triangle ensues when Shelby (Barton), Mike's ex-girlfriend, meets the new woman in his life. Fans of Barton may be shocked to see the sadistic side of the actress, who has become popular as the caring, innocent Marissa Cooper on Fox's show, "The O.C."
"It's going to be a stretch, but it will be something new and unique for her," Young says. "Mischa will definitely surprise a lot of her fans." Barton also has appeared in "The Sixth Sense" and has several projects under way set to be released next year. Stroup had a role in "The Hills Have Eyes II" and several television series guest roles The film is slated to hit independent film festivals, such as Sundance ("Morgan's won there, so he's like the festival's darling," Young says) or Toronto, after production wraps up in fall next year or in 2009.
