Barton nails 'Walled' filmMischa Barton, Deborah Kara Unger and Cameron Bright will star in "Walled In," a psychological thriller to be the first production financed and produced by Leomax Entertainment. Shooting on the French-Canadian co-production begins Oct. 22 in Saskatchewan. Pic marks the English-language debut of French director Gilles Paquet-Brenner, who previously directed "Gomez and Tavares" and "Les jolies choses." Paquet-Brenner scripted. Based on Serge Broselot's bestselling French novel "Les Emmeures," pic casts Barton as a demolition company rep who supervises the razing of a mysterious building and discovers horrifying secrets and past inhabitants entombed within its walls by a vicious murderer. They are backed by the Swiss hedge fund Leomax AG and a multipicture co-financing deal with Starz Media Group. Leomax will make four to six modestly budgeted films in the thriller and action genres, pics that will give offshore talent like Paquet-Brenner the chance to make Hollywood films. Vollkammer, who is producing with Clement Miserez, Jean-Charles Levy and Kevin DeWalt, said "Walled In" will get theatrical distribution before finding its way to Starz. Canadian rights were acquired by co-producer Remstar Prods., while La Petite Reine bought French theatrical, DVD and TV rights and Canal Plus acquired French feevee rights for a film that will cost around $8 million. Barton is currently co-starring in "Assassination of a High School President" opposite Bruce Willis and most recently wrapped the Roland Joffe-directed "Finding t.A.T.u." Mischa will be playing the character of "Sam" and as posted before, filming begins October 22nd.
"Sam is young, smart and beautiful, but she's no ordinary woman, she's a demolition expert, usually considered as a man's job. This job should have been very easy: conduct a structural analysis on a building located in the remote scottish swamps, a necessary step before demolition.
The building was supposed to be empty upon her arriving. But strangely there are still a few lingering tenants, amongst them the caretaker and her 15 year old boy.
The eight-story building has a grim past and Sam, forced to live in the cursed complex while conducting her study to demolish the building, has trouble sleeping. deep in the night, metal banging noises sifting through the walls, the same walls where fifteen years earlier, the building's architect had sadistically murdered some of the tenants by burying them alive within the walls of the building ... including the caretaker‘s husband.
The police had never been able to arrest the killer. Now, deep within the maze-like corridors of the building, guided by the 15 year boy, Sam feels the lingering shadow of these past murders. Sam’s paranoia builds up and comes to a conclusion when she comes face to face with her terrors and we find out who or what continues to haunt this mysterious place."

Minds Eye, Nomadic and Carmody on the go
A prominent Saskatchewan producer reports that production in his province has been solid in 2007, with a couple of features on the go, including one of his own.
Poised to coproduce a $7.3-million feature with France, Minds Eye Pictures principal Kevin DeWalt was feeling anything but Walled In, the literal title of the psychological thriller that went to camera Oct. 23 in Regina.
"It's definitely been busy," says DeWalt. "On a production level, it's been consistent from the beginning of the year."
Minds Eye is coproducing Walled In with Experiences Films and Forecast Pictures, both of France.
Based on the book Les Emmurés by French writer Serge Brussolo, Walled In follows a demolition company rep who discovers bodies have been entombed in a mysterious building.
Starring Mischa Barton (The O.C.) and Canadians Deborah Kara Unger (Shake Hands with the Devil) and Cameron Bright (Juno), the 30-day shoot is mainly at Regina's Canada Saskatchewan Production Studios.
Minds Eye International has rights in Canada, with QED handling the U.S. and Leomax Entertainment foreign rights.
Another $3-million Canadian feature - 45 RPM - is shooting in Saskatchewan with a hybrid financial structure from three provinces, including Ontario and Alberta.
"We didn't just come [here] for the credits," says producer Mike Frislev of Calgary's Nomadic Pictures, in an interview from the set near Craven, a southern town standing in as the northern fictional town of Goose Lake. "The locations have been wonderful."
Frislev and his Nomadic partner Chad Oakes (Broken Trail) joined forces with Saskatchewan coproducer Anand Ramayya (Wapos Bay) and Toronto's Don Carmody (Silent Hill) as exec producer.
Written and directed by Saskatoon's Dave Schultz (Jet Boy), 45 RPM is a 1950s coming-of-age story starring Michael Madsen, August Schellenberg and Amanda Plummer.
The Cold War tale takes us to a rooftop where two teenagers listen to big-city stations on their transistor radios. A New York station, which introduces them to rock 'n' roll, is running a contest that could "be their ticket out of Dodge," Frislev explains.
45 RPM required mainly locations for the 18-day shoot, so the producers set up camp in the province, where they can claim tax credits equalling 55% of eligible labor costs. They also claim credits in Alberta, where post will be handled.

Finally news from Canada Cameron Bright's mother Anne posted information on his forum. Hello everyone, just thought I would send you an update. I can't wait to get this movie rolling. It is only day 4 but feels like day 60. It will be better once we go to camera on Tuesday. Cameron scored a ticket for the Roughrider-Tigercats game on Sunday. He is going with one of the girls from the production office and her brother. Nov 6 Mischa has asked him to join her at the Modest Mouse concert. Apparently it is one of her fave bands. So far no plans for me yet. Oh well, I am used to that. Mischa's mum is with her for a few weeks and they do not look related. In this movie Mischa's character Sam is looking through some pictures and comes across one of her mother holding Baby Sam. Gilles, the director, has asked me to be the mum in the photo because I look more like Mischa than her own mum. I guess I will get that cameo after all. LOL Whew! I do not have to say anything, just look sad. I think I can handle that. My wardrobe, makeup and session is tomorrow and some cute baby will be joining me. Today Cameron had some fun playing around. The hair stylist put a long auburn wig on him and he skipped down the hall in it. He looked so much like that tough long haired biker in that shampoo commercial, flipping his hair this way and that. It was hillarious. He went right into the office and had everyone laughing and Mischa's little dog confused as to who was her real mummy.Tuesday Cameron had a driving lesson. In this movie he takes Sams truck on a joy ride out onto the freeway. He will actually be driving the thing onto the freeway but it will be a blocked set of course. I thought they were going to have the truck rigged to the filming tow, but that is not the case. He is looking forward to it. Saturday night is the welcome to Walled In party. We are not sure if Cameron will be able to attend as the venue is a night club. If he can't go then I will pass also as it would not be right for me to be there and not him. Today is Friday. Yayyyyyy. I am looking forward to getting out and about and I guess I will take advantage of the time while Cameron is at the football game. The weather here all the next week is going to be sunny. I am looking forward to that. Regina can get very cold in the winter. -30 or better at times. I did come prepared with my down North Face coat and my thigh high shearling boots, but I would toss those out for the sun any time. Hope you are all well, just wanted to touch base with you. Take Care Anne Source: www.camfans.org/board/2/showthread.php?t=1414Walled In is feature film produced by Walled In Productions. It is an international co-production with France and Minds Eye Entertainment to be shot at the Canada Saskatchewan Production Studios from October 22 to November 30th. They are seeking crew for the following training positions: Continuity CGI Visual Effects Publicity

November 14: Karim Hussain talks WALLED INAfter a year that saw the high-profile releases of his most recent directorial effort LA BELLE BÊTE/THE BEAUTIFUL BEAST (in Canada) and his long-awaited collaboration with screenwriting partner/director Nacho Cerd* (THE ABANDONED), Montreal filmmaker Karim (SUBCONSCIOUS CRUELTY) Hussain is stepping behind the camera once again on the new horror film WALLED IN, an $8 million Canadian/French/American co-production currently shooting in Regina, Saskatchewan for release next year. Considering the low-budget roots of his previous features, it would sound like WALLED IN is big step up for Hussain, and you would be right. But though he’s certainly earned a shot at the big leagues, Hussein is getting there by a more indirect route: He’s not the project’s director, but rather it’s cinematographer. “It’s a movie that is contrary to how people usually see me; it’s directed by a French filmmaker named Gilles Paquet-Brenner, in his English-language debut,” Hussain tells Fango on a break from preproduction to attend Austin’s Fantastic Fest, where LA BELLE BÊTE had its U.S. festival debut. Starring Mischa (THE SIXTH SENSE) Barton, Deborah Kara Unger from David Cronenberg’s CRASH and Cameron (GODSEND) Bright, WALLED IN is “a horror movie about a mad architect and a girl [Barton] who basically ends up in his building where very dodgy, twisted things happened during its construction,” Hussain explain. “It’s really this young woman’s journey into her past as she encounters this insane architect in this building. For me it’s great, because I’m working very closely with the director on not only the visuals but also the film’s content, and there has been a lot of great creative collaboration. “I’m excited about working on it; it’s going to be an extremely disturbing horror film, while at the same time we’re really concentrating on working on the character’s psychology,” he continues. “I know everyone says that, but this one really does, and it’s the kind of movie that will deliver some rather intense, unpleasant moments. But at the same time, it’s based in architecture; it’s not just a movie made only for the teenage audience, we are taking the adult audience into play. I can actually say that it’s an excellent script and I’m ferociously proud to work on it; it’s a really special one.” Hussain’s long association with the genre (in addition to his earlier films, he has also been a programmer for Montreal’s Fantasia Festival) and experience behind the camera both turned out to be major benefits, which he plans on taking full advantage of. “I’ve shot lots of documentaries, short films and independent stuff for other directors, but this is the first big feature I’ve done,” he notes. “One of the reasons the director asked me to do the film was because he wanted someone who really knew the horror genre and knew what they were talking about in that department. Of course, horror is one of my big passions in life, so he wanted someone who knew that to counterbalance his more European art-house background and the commercial action films he has specialized in. So we can actually do a movie that will please a mainstream audience and be accessible to them, but also one that won’t just jump into the usual horror clichés that some more jaded genre audiences would be savvy to. We’re really working on something that will please both camps and still be entertaining, which is very important for us, while at the same time being quite intelligent and also quite uncompromising in many ways.” As the DP, Hussain believes that his job is to not just make the film look good, but to contribute to the horror elements. “It’s a very elaborate visual scheme we’re working up,” he says. “The important thing about cinematography is that everything has to reflect what’s going on in the character’s psyche—that it doesn’t become an aesthetic ruse or sort of commercial. If the camera’s going to move, it’s going to be for a reason; if a certain lighting scheme is there, it will be there for a reason. The whole movie is really about people molding—literally—into the architecture of this building, both visually in terms of the lighting and compositional sense, and also physically, as you’ll see. Also, it’s a lot about playing between light and darkness, because the lead character has a pathological terror of the dark; she always has to keep moving between them. We’re structuring the whole visual scheme of the film to have only very small pockets of light, to always keep her on edge.” Source: www.fangoria.com/news_article.php?id=5461

Barton focused on chasing her passionMischa Barton leans in as she sips from a Starbucks cup, her hair hanging loosely to past her shoulders. Barton is sitting in a darkened Regina soundstage, relaxed in a long, dark grey wool sweater and black jeans. "I really like it here," she said as she crosses her legs. "Here" is Regina in minus-25 degree weather with several centimetres of snow on the ground -- Barton's home for six weeks as she filmed her latest movie, Walled In, a movie adaptation of the novel Les Emmures by French writer Serge Brussolo. "I have taken a couple of drives out and made it out as far as Moose Jaw and places like that," Barton said of her activities while in the Queen City. "I really haven't had much time off, only on the weekends and that's really when I tried to relax, so things like getting massages and going to the spa have been about as adventurous as I get. It's been a heavy filming schedule for me." Shooting for Walled In, which wrapped in the first week of December, was momentous for Barton -- the film will be the first in which she will carry the movie in a leading role. In the movie, Barton plays Sam, a demolition expert overseeing the destruction of a building inhabited by souls of people buried in the walls by the structure's architect. "She's intense and tiring," Barton said. "She was in my head. It really felt like I lived her because I'm almost in every scene. So it's really been my film and I've had to live it and experience it." Subsequently, Barton chose to perform all her own stunts, which included rigging, jumping and climbing. "You name it, I've been training," Barton said with a laugh. "(Sam's) really quite wiry and intense. She burns off a lot of energy, she's quite a nervous person, she's always dealing with something." Not normally an avid fan of scary movies (though she admits to enjoying psychological thrillers like Silence of the Lambs), Barton was drawn to the role because of the "the smartly written script" which was adapted to the screen by French director Gilles Paquet-Brenner. "When I read the script, I really thought it had so much depth and it was just so interesting," Barton said. "I figured if I would go see it, then I would love to do it." Barton, who jets between her homes in New York and Los Angeles between movie roles, has perused many scripts in her time. Until 2006, the actress was known as Marissa Cooper on the popular television series The O.C., earning her legions of fans and some Hollywood fame. Since then, Barton has gone on to film a handful of movies that include a role in an upcoming Bruce Willis flick called Assassination of a High School President. For the present time, Barton says she is "just feeling it out as I go along." "I think really that for me right now the best thing, the thing that would make me the most happy is to work with people where I get to push myself and experience new things," she said. "I want to be making good films. It's my passion." Source: www.canada.com/reginaleaderpost/story.html?id=845d665c-067e-49fc-a086-96e75ef26de0&k=30543

NEWS!! Psychological thriller 'Walled In'REGINA - It's -35 outside with the wind chill - the kind of Saskatchewan weather that usually prompts a serious case of hat head - but Mischa Barton is perfectly coiffed as she sits in a Regina soundstage. The brunette actress is well-known to TV viewers as spoiled socialite Marissa Cooper from the teen drama "The O.C.," but she's about to show a new side of herself in the psychological thriller "Walled In." "She's much tougher and more of an 'action-y' girl and much more boyish," Barton says of her character, Sam. "That is different from the other roles I've played which tend to be, you know, much prettier and more put together. So it's nice to get to be someone who's just got her hair in a ponytail and is like, you know, a tough girl." Barton recently spent six weeks shooting the project in the Saskatchewan capital.
