I think that, for the first time, probably just a couple of seconds is about right. Then, if they return the look, you can go for longer. The thing is, though, a lot of the time you're not really looking directly into someone's eyes - you're actually scanning their face to see what information you can get from their overall facial expressions. Personally, I don't have a problem with making eye contact - which is probably a good job given that I spend several hours a week working behind a bar! I'm not too great with heights either - which is kind of ironic considering how much I love flying and the fact that I once stood on the open ramp of an RAF Hercules as it was flying along at about 2,000 feet!!!!!
And 5 seconds looking into Mischa's eyes? I'd give everything just to spend 5 seconds in the same room as her!!!
