So how are you with laptops? I've got a bit of an issue with mine too!!.... You found my weakness! Mine's a bit more serious - the screen backlight keeps flickering, and sometimes goes off completely (but it comes back on when I switch the display from internal to external and back again). And it is just the backlight, because when it goes off, if you angle things right, you can see that everything is still there on the screen - you just can't see it... To me, it sounds like a faulty connection between the screen and the power supply. Does it happen more when you move the laptop, or are leaning or typing on it? -- What browser are you using? Have you installed anything recently? What is your Operating System? Is it only a recent problem?

Does it happen more when you move the laptop, or are leaning or typing on it? It does it when it's just sat there on the table and nobody is touching it, and there's no apparent relationship with screen position or movement of or work being done on the computer. Sometimes it doesn't do it at all, while other times, it does it all the time. So there's no apparent connection with movement or stuff like that... My b/f thinks its more like a problem with the circuit that controls the backlight, rather than a loose connection (but he's no expert!).

How long have you had the laptop, and when has the problem started happening? Could you also tell me the laptop make and model number please. At the moment it seems like it could be any number of things; faulty/loose connection; faulty motherboard; faulty circuit; faulty power supply. It is almost certainly a hardware problem. Does the problem happen when you are using the laptop specifically, or when you leave the laptop?

The backlight flickered a little from time to time when I first got it, then stopped doing it for months. But it started again about a month ago, and has been getting steadily worse - and it does it all the time, whether it's being used or left alone. (Ooops - we seem to be hijacking the thread!!!!! )

Sorry Nil! www.mediafire.com/?etn1lmuznxhI have uploaded a Word document with LCD info borrowed from IBM's hardware manual (link included), as well as a link to a laptop repair site, which highlights a problem similar to yours. You will notice IBM also recommends checking the inverter/LED board. I completely understand if you don't want to start opening up your laptop, but I am afraid it may be your only choice. The inverter/LED board is a common problem with many laptop LCDs, so it is what I think the problem is most likely to be. Personally, I would research how to check for problems with each IBM recommendation, and whittle it down to the actual fault. This reminds me why I like normal PCs so much.

Thanks for that info, hun - At least it gives me a start point (And I do have all the manuals as PDF files anyway, including the one which shows you how to replace all the parts...)
Now I think I need to search eBay for a "new" inverter...

Sorry I couldn't have been of any more help.
Chia, I completely forgot that there is a 'Disable Smilies' checkbox on shown just above 'Post Reply' when you post a topic. Make sure the box is unchecked.

It's unchecked hun....it's just weird, cause I can see my smileis in quoted messages (I mean if somebody quotes me, they perfectly appear... :S ) *big shrugs* maybe it's cause I use Opera?

You use Opera?!
I suggest using Firefox, the fastest, most secure browser you can get.
Try looking through Opera options (probably Tools... Options), and seeing if there is JavaScript mentioned anywhere. Make sure it is enabled, and restart your browser.

Everyone's happy!
Chia, out of interest, how did you fix it?
P.S. What does "ETA" mean? I thought it meant 'Estimated Time of Arrival'.
