Intro:Malice in Wonderland takes it's inspiration from the internationally loved story Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and is the wildest, most contemporary interpretation yet, set in the North East of England. Malice is a rites of passage road movie with the sexiest female lead since Tomb Raider. Aimed firmly at a global audience, Malice will tap into and build onto an already extensive awareness of the Lewis Carroll classic, bringing a fresh new perspective to those familiar with the story and an exciting thrill filled adventure for others. The film has an international production budget of £1.5 million. MOVIE SHOOTING DUE TO START IN:August 2008 CAST:Director: Simon FellowsMischa Barton ... AliceDanny Dyer PLOT OUTLINE:ALICE is an American law student in London. Knocked down by a black cab, she wakes with amnesia in a world that's a million miles from home - Wonderland. We follow her adventures as she's dragged through an underworld filled with twisted individuals and the lowest low-lifes, by the enigmatic cab driver WHITEY (The White Rabbit). She needs to find out who she is, where she's from and use what wits she has left to get back home in one piece. As her journey progresses she discovers nothing is what it seems, realises that fate and life are terminally entwined, and finds true love lurking in the unlikeliest place. Along the way, she meets the characters from the book in all new guises. The White Rabbit's a cab-driver. The Caterpillar is a drug dealer. The King & Queen are one character, a transvestite crimelord, The Mad Hatter runs a mobile brothel. Some help, some hinder, but as Alice struggles to find who she was, she realises it's more important to find out who she wants to be. And who she wants to be with. Part thriller, part romance, MALICE IN WONDERLAND rockets along at a million miles per hour. Slick, sexy, funny, inventive, the script sizzles from start to finish. In a world of permanent darkness, can ALICE find light at the end of the tunnel? IMDB movie page

Mischa Barton lost in SunderlandHollywood star Mischa Barton is about to swap Stateside for Wearside as she stars in a modern take on Alice in Wonderland. As reported in the Echo, the former OC actress is taking the lead role in the film Malice in Sunderland – a modern-day re-working of Lewis Carroll's classic tale, based on Wearside. The project had been due to start in 2003 with Ozzy Osborne's daughter Kelly in the lead role, but was dogged by lack of funding. But producer and financier Future Films joined forces with U.S. producers Pierce/Williams Entertainment, and now shooting is set to begin in May or June. Albert Martinez-Martin, of Future Films, said: "We are going through casting options at the moment. "We are preparing the paperwork for the finance, and we'll decide on locations pretty soon." Malice in Sunderland follows the fortunes of American law student Alice. Knocked down by a black cab, she wakes with amnesia in a world that is a million miles from home – Wonderland. Mr Martinez-Martin added: "She's dragged through an underworld filled with twisted individuals and low-lifes by cab driver Whitey (the white rabbit). "She needs to find out who she is, where she's from and use what wits she has left to get back home in one piece." The film is being directed by Simon Fellows, who has previously directed action movies Until Death (out this year) and Second in Command, both starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and 7 Seconds starring Wesley Snipes. The screenplay has been penned by Jayson Rothwell. Other stars attached to Malice in Sunderland are to yet to be announced. City snubbed for remake of Alice A remake of Alice in Wonderland - called Malice in Sunderland - will not be filmed on Wearside. The film was due to be shot in the area but a £250,000 funding shortfall forced the picture's bosses to look elsewhere. The region's film group said it had to spend money on local talent. It will now be filmed in Southend and retitled - Malice in Wonderland. American actress Mischa Barton is to star in the picture, described as a new take on Lewis Carroll's classic tale. Albert Martinez-Martin, producer at Future Films, said: "There is no problem with Sunderland at all, the reasons being we have been looking at locations which are offering help in terms of funding. 'Very sad' "There is about £250,000 which we have lined up from Screen East in Southend and we are looking at locations there right now. "The title was also changed as everyone in the UK would know Sunderland but outside UK they wouldn't. I also thought two puns in one title were one too many." The film's star Barton, best known for her role in US teen soap The OC, is lined up to play a US student who, having been hit by a London taxi, finds herself disoriented in a strange city. Tom Harvey, chief executive of Northern Film and Media, said: "I think it is very sad it can't shoot in the North East. "We have over a £1m to spend but that goes on local people. In this region talent that lives and works here is more important than productions companies coming in." The film is to be directed by British newcomer Simon Fellows. It's all about the money, Jo!

I know, hun - but it's still so frustrating. The south of England seems to get all the money and stuff, just because that's where London is, while most of the country has to do without. My cousin who spent some time working for Avon in Moscow the same time Mischa was out there works contracts all over the country and, when she works down south, she gets paid the equivalent of about £72,000 a year - but the exact same job in the north only pays around £40,000. And whenever there's major events or projects which are likely to bring lots of money into an area, they usually end up going to the south, not the north. Plus, to make things even worse, those in the south seem to have a superiority complex when it comes to anyone who lives north of Watford (just north of London) - they think we're all thick, uneducated and unrefined slobs, while they're the "civilised" ones... (And yes, I know that, technically, Mischa is a southerner, but she didn't live there long enough to be tainted by that sort of thing...) And if they'd been filming in Sunderland, it would have been a hell of a lot easier for me to try and get there than it will be for me to get to Southend...
